Uriel Weinreich

Uriel Weinreich (* May 23, 1926 in Vilnius, † March 30, 1967 in New York) was an American linguist.

Life

Uriel Weinreich was the son of the linguist Max Weinreich. The Weinreich family emigrated in 1940 to the United States. Uriel Weinreich was in 1951 at Columbia University and in 1957 Dean of the linguistic faculty. Research by Weinreich were the Yiddish and sociolinguistics. With his book Languages ​​in contact, he made an important contribution to language contact research. With his programmatic article Is a structural Dialectology possible? 1954 applies Weinreich as one of the pioneers of structuralism in dialectology.

Uriel Weinreich was the initiator of the project LCAAJ ( Language and Culture Archive of Ashkenazic Jewry ), which he headed from 1959 until his death. It has since been continued by Marvin Herzog. The LCAAJ is an extraordinary resource for the study of Yiddish and the culture of Ashkenazic Jewry. It consists of 5755 hours tape recordings of interviews with Yiddish-speaking informants, recorded 1959-1972, as well as approximately 100,000 pages transcripts of the speech material.
