Urvaste Parish

Urvaste ( German: Urbs ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian county Võru with an area of ​​139.9 km ². It has 1433 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2006).

In addition to the main town Urvaste (162 inhabitants) includes the rural community of the villages Kassi, Kirikuküla, Koigu, Kuldre, Kolbi, Lümatu, Pihleni, Ruhingu, Toku, Uhtjärve, Uue- Antsla, Vaabina and Visela.

The church, dedicated to St. Urban of Urvaste is the only medieval church in the style of a basilica in Estonia. Its construction was probably started at the end of the 13th century. 1413 it was first mentioned.

In addition to the Moravians was Urvaste Adam Koljo (approx. 1683-1759 ), the preacher Johann Christian Quandt worked from 1732 to 1750, developed under whose auspices the church for the first and most important center of the Moravian Church in Livonia.

The " Tamme - Lauri oak " in Urvaste, the oldest oak tree in Estonia, was mapped to the 10 kroner banknotes that were up to the introduction of the Euro 2011 in circulation in Estonia.
