Vastseliina Parish

Vastseliina ( German: Neuhausen ) is a rural municipality in the Estonian county Võru with an area of ​​222.8 km ². It has 2 165 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2008).

The community is located 24 km from Võru. Bishop's Castle

About 5 km distant from the present Vastseliina are the ruins of the ancient episcopal castle of Vastseliina. Its construction was begun on 25 March 1342. He was dedicated to the Virgin Mary and therefore called Frouwenborch. Later, the castle was also named Novum castrum, Neuhausen Neuhausen or castle. She was a popular place of pilgrimage since the 14th century. In the Livonian War the castle was badly damaged, but rebuilt. Only in the Northern War in 1702, the plant was destroyed by Russian troops and has since Ruin.
