USS Abner Read (DD-526)

When commissioning:

  • 4 × 40 mm Flak
  • 10 × 21 inch torpedo tubes ( two groups of five )

The USS Abner Read was equipped with radar. On the mast above the bridge an SG and SC radar were mounted with which aircraft could be located at distances of 15 to 30 nautical miles, and ships at distances of 10 to 22 nautical miles. Underwater tracking a QC sonar was installed.

In February 1944, the USS Abner Read moved to Pearl Harbor. From there, they ran to Hollandia. On the way to her starboard propeller was damaged so they had to call at the Milne Bay on March 1 to be repaired. It was then assigned to the TF 75 and took on 22 April in Operation Reckless, landing in the Humboldt Bay, in part. They remained there until the beginning of July in New Guinea and was, among other things participated in the landing on Numfor. In July, she relocated to Eagle Harbor and drove from there on 8 August for a short stay to Sydney.
