USS Barry (DD-2)

The USS Barry (DD -2) was an American destroyer Bainbridge class and the first ship to bear the name of USS Barry after Commodore John Barry ( 1745-1803 ).

The Barry ( Destroyer No.. 2) was laid on March 22, 1902 at Neafie and Levy Ship and Engine Building Co., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania keel. Godmother was Charlotte Adams Barnes, great-grandniece of Commodore Barry. On November 24, 1902, the ship under the command of Lieutenant NE Erwin was put into service.

Barry was placed under the North Atlantic Fleet and took part in maneuvers in the summer of 1903 off the coast of New England. In December 1903, she left the east coast and drove through the Suez Canal to the Asiatic Fleet, where they arrived in April 1904.

By August 1917, the Barry remained with the Asiatic Fleet. On 1 August 1917, she left the Philippines and went through the Suez Canal to Gibraltar, where she arrived on 20 October. She escorted up to the August 1918 merchant ships in the Mediterranean. On September 5, 1918, she reached Charleston, South Carolina. There they remained until the end of the year and provided patrol and convoy duties. On June 28, 1919, she was placed in Philadelphia out of service. On 3 January 1920 she was sold and scrapped later.
