USS Columbia ( SSN -771 ) is a nuclear -powered submarine (SSN ) of the Los Angeles-class and the eighth ship of the United States Navy named Columbia. SSN -771 was named in honor of the city Columbia in South Carolina, Missouri and Illinois.
History
The construction contract was awarded to the Electric Boat shipyard, a division of General Dynamics. It is the 33rd and final manufactured by Electric Boat Los Angeles submarine, whose keel laying took place on 21 April 1993. The ship was christened by Hillary Clinton and put into service on 9 October 1995.
