The USS George Washington ( CVN -73) is the sixth aircraft carrier of the Nimitz class of the U.S. Navy. It is named after the first President of the United States, George Washington. She was laid in the shipyard Newport News Shipbuilding on 25 August 1986, Kiel and put into service on July 4, 1992. Her home port is since September 2008, the port city of Yokosuka in Japan. The carrier thus replaced from the previously stationed there, the last conventionally powered carrier USS Kitty Hawk (CV -63 ).

Fire

24 May 2008 broke out in a ventilation shaft of the carrier of a fire and quickly spread through the cable channels on several decks and a total of 80 chambers; while 37 sailors were injured. The carrier, the USS frigate Crommelin (FFG -37) fueled at the time was located in the Pacific Ocean, near the Galapagos Islands, on the way to Japan. For repairs drove the carrier - after the fire was extinguished - under its own power for the naval base in San Diego ( California). According to media reports of the Commanding Officer Captain David C. Dykhoff and his executive officer, Captain David Dober released because of the accident in July 2008 of the commands on the carrier.
