History

The boat was commissioned in 1976 at Electric Boat in order and went there in 1982 from the stack. The Georgia was put into service in 1984, then still as SSBN, ie for the use of intercontinental ballistic missiles.

Beginning of the 21st century, it was decided to convert four boats of the Ohio - class SSGN to, so for the firing of cruise missiles. The Georgia was the fourth of these boats. Preparations reconstruction began on November 7, 2003, when the Georgia eindockte in the Naval Base Kitsap to have discharged their ICBMs. In this case an accident happened at the sixteenth rocket. After a ladder lowered into the shaft and the crane was attached to the rocket, the crew took a break and forgot after the return to remove the ladder. When the missile was then raised, cut the metal conductor is a 229 mm long hole in the nose of the rocket. After the accident, three soldiers of the Strategic Weapons Facility Pacific were tried by a military court and closed the plant immediately. Only after an inspection on 9 January 2004, she was re-opened.

In March 2005, the Georgia finally docked in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard to begin the conversion. On November 29, she left the shipyard for test drives. On March 28, the boat returned to the fleet, but will be modernized again between summer 2008 and early 2009.
