The USS Gettysburg (CG -64) Guided Missile Cruiser is a United States Navy and is a member of the Ticonderoga class.

History

Construction

The Gettysburg in 1986 at Bath Iron Works commissioned and 1988 there Keel-laying. The launch took place after a construction period of eleven months, the ship was named after the Battle of Gettysburg.

Inserts

The first use of Gettysburg took place in 1992 as escort for the USS John F. Kennedy (CV -67) in the Mediterranean instead. In 1993, the cruiser was used in Operation Support Democracy against Haiti. After just two weeks, the ship was however replaced. The next regular use started in June 1994, the Gettysburg moved into the Baltic Sea, to the exercise BALTOPS. With the USS Halyburton (FFG -40) visited the Gettysburg from 9 to 14 November 1994, two ports (including Cape Town ) in South Africa. This was the first friendly visit by U.S. vessels in South Africa in February 1967. On November 30, the two ships were ordered to help the Horn of Africa Achille Lauro of, one fallen into fire cruise ship. The burned-out hull of the ship sank on December 2. The Gettysburg supplied the evacuated on a tanker passengers with food and medical supplies.

1996 was the Gettsyburg go with the battle group led by the USS Enterprise ( CVN -65) and participated in Operation Desert Strike. Two years later, again as a security for the enterprise, the Gettysburg actively participated in Operation Desert Fox.
