The USS Iwo Jima (CV -46 ) was a planned but never finished aircraft carrier of the Essex class, the United States Navy. The name derives from the island of Iwo Jima against Japan, which took place at the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II.

History

The aircraft carrier was designated as Crown Point in January 1945 at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia on Kiel. During the construction work was done in honor of participating in the Battle of Iwo Jima soldiers renamed the USS Iwo Jima. The construction of the ship was set with the looming end of the Second World War, on 12 August 1945. The unfinished hull of the support was on the slipway of the yard completely demolished and scrapped in the following months.
