USS Kearsarge (1861)

USS Kearsarge is the name of a warship of the U.S. northern states, within the framework of the Civil War on 19 June 1864 Confederate privateer and blockade-runner " CSS Alabama " sunk and thus a famous international dispute between the United States and England triggered (Alabama question ).

The spectacular sea duel between the two ships outside the harbor of Cherbourg was observed by a large crowd of onlookers. The USS Kearsarge was equipped with a modern 150pfündigen rotary cannon which fire the unarmored CSS Alabama had the strength to hardly anything. In the same year Édouard Manet created a painting of this battle.

The USS Kearsarge was launched on February 2, 1894 at the Roncador Bank, a coral reef in the southwestern Caribbean, on the basis and was painted in the same year from the Naval Vessel Register.

In honor of the USS Kearsarge was the battleship built from 1896 USS Kearsarge (BB -5) of the name. Later the name as a tradition to name the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge (CV- 33) and the amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge (LHD -3) was passed.
