The USS Miami ( SSN -755 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles- class. It is named after the city of Miami in Florida.

History

The order for SSN -755 was awarded in 1983. In October 1986, the keel was laid at the Miami Electric Boat, after just over two years of construction, the submarine was launched. After completing the final details at the Pier and successfully completing sea trials followed in June 1990, the official commissioning ceremony at the U.S. Navy.

1998 Miami fired the cruise missile of the type BGM -109 Tomahawk from at targets in Iraq and Kosovo. This was done as part of Operation Desert Fox and Operation Allied Force. In summer 2006, an overhaul was performed at EB, which drew cost of 29.3 million U.S. dollars by itself. Followed in 2007 by an Expeditionary Strike Group deployment in the USS Kearsarge (LHD -3). The next installation was followed by 2009. 2011 drove the Miami in European waters, and laid among others, the Norwegian base Haakonsvern.

On March 15, 2012, the Miami docked into the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for a 20 -month overhaul. 23 May 2012 put a shipyard worker during the dockyard time in the front part of the submarine fire. The arsonist was sentenced to 17 years in prison .. At the time of the fire no weapons on board and the nuclear reactor had was not in operation. During fire five firefighters and two crew members were injured. Were damaged, especially the control, combat system and torpedo room in the bow of the submarine. Due to the impending austerity measures, the U.S. Navy announced on August 7, 2013 known to reject the planned repairs and let scrapping the submarine.
