The USS Mullinnix (DD -944 ) was a destroyer Forrest Sherman class of the United States Navy. She was named for Rear Admiral Henry M. Mullinnix.

History

Construction and commissioning

Ordered on 23 October 1954, the Mullinix was laid on April 5, 1956 at Bethlehem Steel in Quincy, Massachusetts on Kiel. After the baptism by the widow of its namesake, Mrs. Kathryn F. Mullinnix, the destroyer ran on March 18, 1957 by stack. Entry into service with the U.S. Navy was more equipment works on 7 March 1958.

Office hours

The Mighty Mux how the ship was named by its crew soon, mostly operated in the Atlantic and the Caribbean, but also took several trips with the 6th Fleet in the Mediterranean. 1966 was the destroyer for salvaging fleet of Gemini 8- landing capsule in the Atlantic, in August 1967, she was part of the rescue fleet for the AS -202 unmanned test of the Apollo spacecraft. This use joined to a three-month stay in the western Pacific, off the coast of Vietnam, and the first circumnavigation of the world on the destroyer. Until decommissioning on 11 August 1983, Mullinix was operating again in Atlantic waters.

Whereabouts

After their withdrawal, the Mullinix remained until July 26, 1990 in the reserve fleet, then it was removed from the ship registers. On August 23, 1992, she was sunk as a target ship during a training exercise.
