The USS Rhode Iceland (SSBN-740) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Ohio - class. As Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear ( SSBN ) carry 24 intercontinental ballistic missiles.

History

SSBN -740 was commissioned in 1988 and set in September of the year at Kiel. Shipyard was the Group General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton belonging, Connecticut. In July 1993, the construction was completed, the boat could be launched from the dock and named after the U.S. state of Rhode Iceland. Godmother was Mrs. Kati Machthley. Originally, the SSBN -730 will be named after the state in New England, just days before the baptism, however, the plan of the just deceased U.S. Senator Henry M. Jackson was modified and selected as patron.

In the year after the launch was followed by the final outfitting and sea trials shipyard, on July 9, 1994 Rhode Iceland was officially put into service. From Kings Bay, Georgia, the boat is traveling in the Atlantic Fleet.
