The USS Richard S. Edwards (DD -950 ) was a destroyer Forrest Sherman class of United States Navy.

History

Construction and commissioning

The construction contract for the Richard S. Edwards was taken on January 27, 1956, the keel-laying ceremony took place on December 20 at the Puget Sound Bridge and Dredging Company held on Puget Sound, Washington. On 5 February 1959, commissioned into the Navy took place.

Office hours

Your maiden voyage led by Richard S. Edwards to Valparaíso. She was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and used in the Vietnam War. Here, the destroyer belonged temporarily to secure the ASW aircraft carrier USS Bennington. During the maneuver on August 11, 1960, about 175 nautical miles west of San Francisco, a damaged rudder aboard the Richard S. Edwards, which led to a collision with the carrier occurred. Although no personnel losses were to complain, the destroyer suffered extensive damage to the superstructure and had in the subsequent period up to November 1962 in San Diego in the yard.

27 February 1970 to 15 January 1971, she was modernized at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard.

The ship received six battle stars.

Whereabouts

After its decommissioning, the ship was sunk in May 1997 as a target ship off Kauai.
