The USS Robert E. Lee ( SSN-/SSBN-601 ) was a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and was part of the George Washington class. It was named after Robert Edward Lee, a general in the Confederate States Army.

History

SSBN -601 was commissioned in 1958 and only three weeks later, Keel-laying. Built by Newport News Shipbuilding was. The end of 1959 the boat was launched and christened by Mrs. Hanson E. Ely II. In September 1960, the boat was officially put into service.

After torpedo test followed on 22 December 1960, the first test shot of a UGM - 27A Polaris. In 1961, the Robert E. Lee participated in anti-submarine exercises against USS Torsk (SS- 423). After a time the dockyard LEE moved its home port to Holy Loch, Scotland. 1965, a first overhaul was performed in San Francisco, where the rocket launch system was modernized. 1967 returned the submarine back to Holy Loch.

1971 was followed by an overhaul in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, following Apra Harbor was, Guam new home port. There they remained until 1981. 1983 the boat was decommissioned and held for three years in the reserve fleet. Until 1991, the Robert E. Lee was canceled as the first submarine in the Ship- Submarine Recycling Program.
