The USS San Francisco ( SSN -711 ) is a nuclear submarine of the United States Navy and is part of the Los Angeles- class.

History

Construction

The on October 27, 1979 passed by the stack of San Francisco was built at the shipyard of Newport News Shipbuilding and submitted to the United States Navy on 24 April 1981 in service.

After the test runs off the east coast of the United States moved the San Francisco to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. She also visited her hometown of San Francisco.

Inserts

During her time in the Pacific, San Francisco won in 1986 and 1988, the Battle E for excellent willingness to 1994, the T for excellent tactical operations, as well as the Meritorious Unit Commendation. Between 1989 and 1990, the boat spent some months at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard, where it was retrofitted with the latest in sonar and fire control.

2000 moved the San Francisco to the East Coast to Norfolk, in December 2002, then back to the Pacific to Apra Harbor, Guam.

Groundings

On 8 January 2005, the San Francisco 350 nautical miles (about 35 knots ) ran south of Guam at full speed in 525 feet of water against an undersea mountain. Here, the bow of the submarine was badly damaged, torn open the front ballast tank and the Sonardom completely destroyed. The boat could show up and go back under its own power on the surface to Guam, where it arrived on 10 January.

However, already a crew member, the 24- year-old Joseph Allen Ashley, on January 9, had succumbed to his injuries. Almost all sailors on board suffered at least minor injuries, 29 of which had to be treated in hospital.

An investigative report later showed that the chart used for navigation the mountain did not show, however it was indicated on other cards on board as a Hazardous environment. The captain, Commander Kevin Mooney, was relieved of his command and transferred to land, other officers were given references, other crew members, in turn, awards for outstanding behavior in an emergency situation.

After first repairs in Guam, where the diving ability was restored, drove the boat to the surface under its own power in the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, where the San Francisco was completely restored in December 2006 in dry dock. Since the nuclear fuel of the reactor was refilled just before the accident and still not enough until 2017, the Navy decided to repair the boat. To this end, the bow of the off-duty asked sister ship USS Honolulu was separated (SSN- 718) and welded to the San Francisco. It was only on 10 October 2008, the San Francisco was allowed back in the water, in April 2009, she left the yard and was stationed in San Diego. The cost of the repair should have stood at 134 million U.S. dollars.

In November 2010, San Francisco was again moved in the direction of Southeast Asia.
