Uthörn

Uthörn is a small neighboring island of the North Frisian island of Sylt and is the second most northern island after this in Germany. Uthörn belongs to the municipality Sylt List.

Geography

The island is located in King Harbor, a bay on the eastern side facing the Wadden island of Sylt. It is located north of the village cunning and one kilometer south of the elbow Peninsula, the northernmost point of Germany.

Uthörn is 780 meters long, up to 240 meters wide and has a surface area of over 13 hectares. The island is relatively young and has evolved from a sandbank. By sandy alluvial deposits of the coastal dunes of Sylt Uthörn has now grown to a height of 4.10 meters, well above sea level and is no longer flooded at high tide. It is believed that the growth of the island will continue in the future. So far Uthörn is only covered with typical for the North Sea coast pioneer plants such as the ordinary beach grass.

Conservation

The island is just a few meters from the banks of the Wadden island of Sylt. She can be reached on foot through the shallow Wadden Sea. However, since it is a breeding and resting place of rare and protected marine birds, it is mentioned as a " bird sanctuary Uthörn " and may only be entered without permission. In addition, it is located in the National Park Schleswig -Holstein Wadden Sea.
