Utricularia sandersonii

Utricularia sandersonii is a carnivorous plant in the genus of the water hoses in the section Calpidisca. It was first described in 1867 by Daniel Oliver.

Description

Utricularia sandersonii is a terrestrial growing type, which is a popular home plant now especially due to its beautiful inflorescence and its easy culture. It is directly related to Utricularia livida and was formerly known as Utricularia aurea var classified multiflora.

The stolons of the plant often extend up to 10 cm deep into the earth. Are located on the stolons mostly underground the 1-1.5 millimeters big catch bubbles. The traps have tentacle -like appendages around their input.

From the stolons light green, spoon-shaped, round edged leaves, which can reach a width of 1-6 mm and a length of up to 15 mm grow. The plant forms with their leaves all year round a thick green lawn from a height of 3 to 6 mm.

Flowers, fruits and seeds

In the natural habitat the plant blooms in the spring (July to September ) and autumn (January to May). A flower stalk reaches a length of up to 5 inches and carries up to 7 single flowers, each reaching a width of 6 mm and a length of 13 millimeters. The flowers carry a very light blue ( wisteria or even wistaria Blue).

The flower can be divided into upper and lower lip divided, the upper lip is split in two narrow parts which are characterized each by a purple stripe in the middle. The lower lip is twice as long as the upper lip, and forms a flat, wide band; on the lower part it forms a semi-circular, wavy edge. The yellow- green palate is framed purple.

The seeds of the plant are light to germinate, are ovate and up to 0.8 mm long.

Distribution and habitat

Utricularia sandersonii is in the east of South Africa, the subtropical Natal area endemic. It grows directly on wet rock at an altitude of 210-1200 m above sea level. NN.

The temperatures are there in winter about 20 ° C in summer to 35 ° C. The plant is still relatively cold-resistant and will survive cold winters with up to 5 ° C.
