Ututo

Ututo is a product from Argentina project, which released a Linux distribution and, based on software projects are developed and carried out activities in the field of education.

Called The Linux distribution, Ututo GNU / Linux, is driven mainly by Argentine developers since 2000, based on Gentoo Linux and consists entirely of free software.

The name comes from a Ututo in Argentina widespread gecko species.

History of development

The first version of Ututo was developed by Diego Saravia at the University of Salta in October 2000. The goal was a Linux version that could be completely start from a CD (Live - CD). Ututo was one of the first distributions that achieved this goal.

2002, the project Ututo -R was started, a version of the operating system, which had as a goal to work as a software router. Ututo -R was installed in Argentina on multiple networks in organizations and schools, for example, in Buenos Aires.

The version Ututo -e, a desktop version, was launched in 2004. It was developed with the primary goal of offering a full-fledged operating system with the base composed entirely of free software that will run on older hardware, as it is often still found in Argentina, especially in the aftermath of the Argentine crisis.

Since 2005, the operating system is referred to as Ututo XS, because the newer versions a completely new design, including easy installation environment have. The Live CD version is also referred to by this name, but as Ututo XS Vivo (Spanish for live).

Other activities
