Václav Kaprál

Václav Kaprál ( born March 26, 1889 in Určice; † 6 April 1947, Brno ) was a Czech composer.

Life

Kaprál was from 1907 to 1910 studied composition with Leoš Janáček and 1919-1920 Vítězslav Novák and studied piano with Marie Kuhlova, Adolf Miks, Klara Schäferova and finally Alfred Cortot in Paris. In 1911 he founded a private music school in Prague. Between 1919 and 1928 he was also active as a choral conductor and music critic for several magazines. He also appeared in the 1920s as a piano duo with Ludvik Kundera. Since 1927 he has taught at the Masaryk University in Brno, in 1935 he became a professor at the Conservatory and a member of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Arts. In 1942 he was arrested by the Gestapo and was until 1945 the camp of Swatoborschitz. Since 1946 he has taught at the Academy of Music in Brno. His daughter Vítězslava Kaprálová became known as a composer.

Kaprál composed sonatas, Sonatinas and other pieces for the piano, two string quartets and a piano quartet, a fair, choral works, songs and folk song arrangements.
