Václav Treitz

Václav Treitz, also Wenzel Treitz, (* 1819 in Hostomice pod Brdy, Bohemia; † August 27, 1872 in Prague) was a Czech pathologist.

Life and work

Treitz was born the son of a lawyer. After high school, he graduated in Benešov, he studied medicine at the University of Prague. He completed his further studies in Vienna with Josef Hyrtl (1810-1894), an Austrian anatomist. After that he worked as a physician at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. 1855 Treitz returned back to Prague, where he was appointed Professor and Director of the Institute of Pathological Anatomy.

In addition to his medical practice Václav Treitz was an icon in the struggle of the Czech national movement.

On August 27, 1872 Treitz committed suicide at the age of 52 years with cyanide suicide.

Terms that are associated with the name Treitz

  • Treitz discovered in 1853 musculus suspensorius ulcer, which later Treitzsches ligament or Treitzsches ligament ( suspensory duodenal ) was called. The structure fixes the transition from the duodenum and jejunum to the posterior wall of the abdominal cavity.
  • Treitzscher angle: a sharp bend of the duodenojejunal junction
