Väinö Ikonen

Väinö Johannes Vilhelm Icons ( born October 5, 1895 in Tuusniemi, † February 10, 1954 in Helsinki) was a Finnish wrestler and bronze medalist at the 1924 Olympics in Paris.

Career

Väinö icons began in Kuopio with the rings and became a member of the wrestling clubs Kuopion Riento, an association of ( TUL) belonged to the Finnish Workers Sports Association. Later he moved to the general Finnish Wrestling Federation club Helsingin Kisa - belonging Veikot. Väinö wrestled mainly in the Greco- Roman style. In 1918, he first drew attention to himself by a 4th place at the Finnish Championships in featherweight. He celebrated his biggest success at the World Championship 1921 in Helsinki, when he won the world title with four wins.

At the World Cup in 1922, the last World Cup before a long break until 1950, he won a medal. But such he won again by winning the bronze medal at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris in the bantamweight, Greco- Roman style. Väinö was then still several years active, but came to no start at an international championship more.

Icons was also a successful athlete. In the Finnish Championships 1916, he won a bronze medal in the pole vault. In 1915 he had positions five reached in the high - and four in the pole vault.
