Valerius of Saragossa

Valerius of Saragossa, also Valero (* in Valencia, Spain, † 315 in ENATE, Aragon ) was bishop of Saragossa.

Prudentius suggests a descent from the Roman family of the Valerii. Valerius took ( uncertain 300-324 ) at the Synod of Elvira in Granada part. Dacian, the governor of the province Tarraconensis, let him arrest 304 at the same time with his Archdeacon Vincent and bring to Valencia, where Vincent suffered martyrdom. Valerius was banished to ENATE, where he died without being able to return after the Edict of 313 on his bishopric. He was buried in the church of Estada. On October 20, 1065 his relics were brought to their retrieval by Bishop Arnulf of Estada to Roda de Isábena. 1170 King Alfonso II could acquire the relic head of Saragossa, whose patron is the Holy One. An arm relic of Saragossa had already Alfonso I in 1121 received after the city had recaptured in 1118. 1397 Peter de Luna has let in Avignon a silver Büstenreliquiar make, which is now preserved in the treasury of the Cathedral of Zaragoza.

The oldest news about Valerius found in the Passio vincentii I from the 5th century, while the Legenda Valerii I was recorded in the 12th century after an older template.

The feast of the saint is celebrated in the Roman Catholic Church on January 28th.
