Valie Export

Valie Export ( born May 17, 1940 in Linz), whose real name Waltraud Stockinger, born Waltraud Lehner, is an Austrian media artist.

Life and work

Valie Export grew up in Linz with two sisters, the daughter of a war widow and went to a convent school. From 1955 to 1958 attended Valie Export the School of Applied Arts in Linz, from 1960 to 1964, the Higher Federal Education and Research Institute for Textile Industry in Vienna. In 1967, she took her stage name Valie Export as artistic concept and logo, with the requirement to write it in capital letters only. This action they want to be understood as a feminist critique of patriarchal- capitalist attribution practices. Before a proper name tops the individual feeding into the market activity that he would be better replaced by a logo.

In 1977 she took part in documenta 6 in Kassel. In 1980 she represented together with Maria Lassnig Austria at the Biennale in Venice. 1985 her feature film " The Practice of Love " in the category written and directed for the Golden Bear at the International Film Festival of Berlin was nominated. From 1989 to 1992 she was a full professor at the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, School of Fine Arts. 1991-1995 Professor in the Department of Visual Communication at the University of the Arts Berlin. From 1995 / 96-2005 Valie Export was a professor of multimedia performance at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne. In 2007, she was present at both the Venice Biennale and at Documenta 12. 2011 showed the Austrian Gallery Belvedere and the Museion in Bolzano their exhibition time and time counter. In the Kunsthaus Bregenz she showed 2011/2012 her exhibition archive. From 27 January to 3 March 2012, an exhibition at the gallery in Vienna Charim was shown.

Valie Export lives in Cologne and Vienna.
