Van Coke Kartel is a South African punk rock band.

Band History

The band originated as a side project of two musicians Francois " Van Coke" Badenhorst (vocals) and Wynand Myburgh ( bass) of Fokofpolisiekar, supplemented by the drummer Justin Kruger, who had already stood in for Fokofpolisiekar drummer Jaco Venter, suffered as this one accident had. Although Kruger at the time of the release of their debut album officially was already member of the band, all the drum parts were still recorded by the session drummer Mike Horn. Unlike Fokofpolisiekar Van Coke also takes on the role of the guitarist. The lyrics are as written in Afrikaans with Fokofpolisiekar.

The first self-titled album came out in November 2007 and was aware straightforward than the then current, elaborately arranged Fokofpolisiekaralbum " Swanesang " from. This changed somewhat with the published one year later successor Waaksaam en Wakker, which with various guest contributions ( Hammond organ, accordion and cello ) and a ballad at the end was more varied. The duration of the two albums is about 30 or 35 minutes shorter than in the two previously published Fokofpolisiekar albums.

March 2010 was followed by Skop, Skiet en Donner 's third album, the two cover versions of popular hits ( Maniac by Michael Sembello and Cocaine by JJ Cale, made ​​famous by Eric Clapton ) for the first time contains two English songs. The album ends with three acoustic versions of songs from the previous two, they are the only ones on which Justin Kruger plays drums on the other tracks playing Peach van Pletzen, who also worked as a producer and contributed further instruments and arrangements.
