Vanillin-Dehydrogenase

  • CAS Number: 189767-93-9

A vanillin dehydrogenase ( VDH, EC 1.2.1.67 ) is an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of vanillin to vanillic acid. The dehydrogenase belongs to the family of oxidoreductases.

For the reaction, NAD is required as a cofactor which is reduced to NADH:

The enzyme was detected eg in Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Vanillin there is an intermediate product in the degradation of ferulic acid to protocatechuic acid, which is then further metabolized by ring cleavage.

The absence of the cofactor NAD reduced the enzymatic activity in P. fluorescens.

Homologous enzymes were also found in Burkholderia species and generally belong to the aldehyde dehydrogenases.
