Varilhes

Varilhes ( Occitan: Varilhas ) is a commune in the Ariège department in the Midi-Pyrénées region with 3138 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011). It lies on the River Ariege and is the capital of the canton of Varilhes.

Traffic

Varilhes is located on the Route nationale 20 (E 09) from Paris to the Spanish border. The station is served by trains of the railway line Portet -Saint -Simon- Puigcerda.

History

1948 was awarded the Croix de Guerre, the municipality of World War II for the brave resistance against the German occupiers.
