Varlin
Willy Guggenheim ( born March 16, 1900 in Zurich, † 30 October 1977 in Bondo GR ), also known Varlin, was a Swiss painter. Varlin was close friends with Hugo Loetscher and Friedrich Dürrenmatt, he also painted.
Life
Willy Guggenheim grew up in an assimilated Jewish family. When he was 12 years old, his father died two months before his older sister. He moved to St. Gallen, where he attended the district school and vocational school and made a half -year apprenticeship in the Lithografenanstalt Seitz. Thus came into contact with the Senefelder stones which also used Édouard Manet, Honoré Daumier, Paul Gavarni and Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec. Lithograph he learned as a strenuous and tedious work know and vowed never to make a lithograph; an oath, the Varlin held with few exceptions.
1921 Varlin went to Berlin, where he became a student at the State School of Applied Arts. Followed in 1923 Paris, where he remained for eleven years. He attended the Académie Lhote and the Académie Julian.
When his mother lost her fortune, he came to the realization that " art is out of work, having to earn something." He joined the company world Risacher on the Faubourg Montmartre, from which he had to re-emerge. They had allegedly told him that he was not even able to sharpen a pencil. Guggenheim then made to drawings for humorous newspapers that had to be less beautiful than obscene and were exhibited at the "Salon des Humoristes ". He rent a studio at the Rue de Vanves. His sponsors Leopold Zborowski said that you " will have no success named American art magnate and racehorse owner Paris " with the name Guggenheim. The name Varlin was found.
Zborowski rented him a studio in artist round pavilion La Ruche, where Alexander Archipenko, Chaim Soutine, Marc Chagall and Fernand Léger had worked. Varlin spent a year in Cros -de- Cagnes in the south of France. His exhibition at the gallery Sloden, Faubourg St- Honoré, was a resounding success. Zborowski died in 1932. 1935 Varlin traveled with his mother and sister back to Switzerland, lived 35 years in a Wollishofer three-room apartment, which also served as his two years as a studio.
In a condemned building he lived in a rented studio with painter Leo Leuppi, a Dane named Olsen, Gusti Vogt, the sculptor Louis Conne, who died young sculptors Hans Hippele and Meinrad Marti. Thanks to the efforts of the then Art Pope Righini Varlin was still the requested federal grant that he had not first obtained ( Varlin had a " Rückenakt " sent from the back. ) Following the demolition of the house Varlin rent another studio in a farmhouse room, led a time long a life as a loafer, was objectors.
