Varnavas (Greek Βαρνάβας ( m. sg. ) ) Is a small town with 1,308 inhabitants ( 2011) and a district of the town of Marathon in the Greek region of Attica, with around 2,500 inhabitants. From 1912 until its annexation to marathon it was an independent country town in East Attica Prefecture district.

Varnavas located about 35 km north-west of the Athens city center on the southern Gulf of Euboea. The center is located around 450 meters above sea level, 12 km from the Aegean coast, has part in the Varnavas with a roughly seven -kilometer section. To the west is bordered Varnavas to the community Oropus, lying to the east the municipal districts Marathon and Grammatiko.

More details about the ancient settlement of the area is not known to the municipal area of ​​the ancient city Semachidai was suspected, for which there is no evidence, however. According to legend, the place for the Holy Barnabas said to be named, the missionary work here; more likely, however, is the theory that he got his name from a wealthy landowner here.

Originally, the village was inhabited by Arvanites, here initially operated livestock. Later, also agriculture and horticulture, especially the viticulture developed. Due to the location of the village close to the densely populated area of Greece, the inhabitants were in the 20th century also worked as laborers in factories or in the construction industry, in recent decades, the city is booming due to the influx of residents from the Athens area. The Albanian element is virtually gone, animal husbandry and farming professions go for activities in the service sector dropped sharply. With its beach with its high water quality Varnavas is also a major holiday and leisure area for the metropolitan region of Athens.

In Varnavas there are some attractions, the ruins of a tower dating from the 5th century BC and a tower of the Byzantine era, the Byzantine churches of Agios Georgios and Agia Paraskevi and the wooden iconostasis in the Saints Peter and Paul consecrated main church.

Among the regular festivals of the church include the feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29, and various summer annual cultural festivals such as "The waves of the sea" (Ta kymata tis Thalassa, Τα Κύματα της Θάλασσας ).

The town has a crèche, a kindergarten and a primary school, medical care is secured by a " health center " in the neighboring municipality Kapandriti, where there is also a police station is located.
