Velddrif

Province

Velddrif is a small town in the municipality Bergrivier, district, West Coast, Western Cape Province in South Africa. It is located about 160 kilometers north of Cape Town, about two miles from the mouth of the River Berg River into the Atlantic. 2011, the city had 11,017 inhabitants.

The name Velddrif arose when a farmer, Theunis Smit, his cattle on a piece of land ( Afrikaans: veld ) on both sides of the River Berg River grazing and let the animals on a ford ( Afrikaans: drif ) from one to the other side changed. 1899 there was built a hand-operated ferry.

Through the establishment of a cannery in the early 20th century, there developed a settlement, which was officially mentioned in 1946 and 1960 received the city status.

Attractions

  • The city as a destination of July annually conducted Berg River Canoe Marathon, which starts and ends in Paarl after four days and 208 kilometers in Port Owen, Velddrif of the port is known.
  • The Rocherpan Nature Reserve is located 25 kilometers north of Velddrif.
