Bralná Fatra

The Great Fatra (Slovak Velka Fatra ) is a wooded mountain range in central Slovakia. It belongs to the Fatra - Tatra Area, which in turn is one of the Inner Western Carpathians. The mountain range is approximately between the cities Ružomberok in the Northeast, Martin in the northwest, Turčianské Teplice in the southwest and the community Harmanec in the southeast.

Limit

The Great Fatra is limited

  • To the north by mountains Orava Highlands and the eastern part of the Lesser Fatra,
  • In the north- east from the mountains Chočské Hills,
  • To the east from the valley of Podtatranská kotlina and the Low Tatras,
  • To the southeast from the mountains Starohorské Hills,
  • In the southwest of the mountains and Kremnitz
  • To the west from the valley of Turčianska kotlina ( Turzbecken ).

Structure

The mountain is geomorphologically further divided ( from north to south):

  • Šípska Fatra,
  • Šiprúň,
  • Lysec,
  • Holna Fatra,
  • Revúcke podolie,
  • Zvolen (mountains ),
  • Bralná Fatra.

Mountain character

The ridges extend predominantly in a north-south direction and are in the high altitudes largely deforested. The highest mountain is the Ostredok 1592 meters. Other peaks in the central massif are the mountains Rakytov ( 1567 meters) and Płoska ( 1532 meters). The longest valley is the Ľubochnianka Valley (Slovak Ľubochnianska dolina ) with 25 kilometers.

About 90 percent of the mountains are covered with forests. So up to an area at the crest Smrekovica the ridges are forested in the northern part of the mountain. Mainly there are beech and spruce stands. But a large number of yew trees can be found in this mountain range.

The way leading to the west valleys have karst phenomena (for example, the valley Gaderská dolina ).

Conservation

Since 2002, the Great Fatra one of the national parks in Slovakia (see National Park Velka Fatra ); be protected among other things, still living bears.

Tourism

Through a cable car south of Ružomberok access from the north to the winter sports area around the mountain Malinné around is guaranteed. In the southern part, you can get over a chairlift from the place Turecká north of Banská Bystrica in the mountains. Important mountains are here Smrekov ( 1441 meters), Krížna ( 1574 meters ) and Kráľova studna ( 1384 meters), the latter. Homonymous with a mountain hotel in the immediate vicinity Interesting folk architecture in particular, in the village of Vlkolínec ( UNESCO World Heritage since 1993, district of Ružomberok ) and can also be found in Liptovské Revúce. Also, some resorts such as Ľubochňa in the north and in the Považie Turčianské Teplice in the southwest are in the range of the Great Fatra. Donovaly, one of the most important ski resorts in Slovakia is located on the border of the mountains Starohorské Hills in the southeast.
