Velký Špičák

The Great Spitzberg, seen from Baerenstein

The Velky Špičák ( Big Spitzberg, also Schmiedeberger Spitzberg ) is a 965 m high mountain in the Czech part of the Erzgebirge.

Location

It is located north of the community Kovářská ( Schmiedeberg ) and about 5 km south Jöhstadt in Saxony. West of the mountain is the valley of the black water. In the east, the vast valley of the Preßnitz is with the dam Preßnitz, in its place was located until 1973, the old mining town Přísečnice ( Preßnitz ).

Way to the summit

  • The road Kovářská Dam Preßnitz passes right below the Velky Špičák. From the Preßnitz Dam branches off to the forest house in a left turn from a first path, then in a straight line, a second and a few hundred meters further, a third. This third path leads steeply uphill a few meters to the right, then makes a right turn. After a while, turns left a small path that winds its summit.

Description

Striking at Spitzberg is its largely treeless basalt dome that protrudes from a plateau and is only about 100 meters wide. At the highest point there is a cross on the summit with several top books. Through a left open quarry, the columns of basalt formation is clearly visible.
