Venado Tuerto

Venado Tuerto is a city in central Argentina. It is located in the southwest of the province of Santa Fe in the department of General López and has 69 563 inhabitants (2001, INDEC ). Due to its cultural and economic importance it bears the name Esmeralda del Sur ( Emerald of the South).

Location and Geography

The city is located in the northwest of Pampa level, which is used for intensive agriculture in the region. The climate is warmgemäßigt and relatively moist. Around the city there are several small lakes.

History

In the area of Venado Tuerto there was in the 19th century several forts, in which the Spanish -born Argentines tried to compete with the matter in controlling Indians. After the last great battle in 1878 the situation calmed down, and the pioneer Eduardo Casey founded the city in 1883. The town quickly became a major retail center, especially after it was connected to the railway network in 1890. The population was dominated by immigrants from various countries of Europe.

In 1963, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Venado Tuerto was built based in Venado Tuerto.

Economy

Venado Tuerto is an important industrial center. Particularly important is the agricultural industry, which processes the agricultural products of the region.
