Venafrum

Venafrum was an ancient city of the Samnites in the valley of Volturnus (now Venafro in the Italian region Molise ).

Venafrum lay on the natural communication route between Samnium and Campania. In the Augustan period, the city was colonia.

Have received on the hillside of what Monte S. Croce remains of the orthogonal city Facilities ( divided into blocks ), the ramparts, Domus from the 1st century BC, with mosaics and paintings of the third Pompeian style, a Roman theater from the 1. century BC derived with extensions from iulisch - Claudian period, an amphitheater and an aqueduct, the water from the headwaters of the Volturnus and its operation is described in an edict inscriptions preserved.

346 AD, an earthquake damaged the theater.
