Ventidius Cumanus

Ventidius Cumanus was a Roman knight to 52 AD held the command in Judea 48.

It is disputed whether Cumanus was still assumed to be Prefect of the governor of Syria, or whether he was Präsidialprokurator. Under his leadership, there were numerous confrontations with Jewish groups. Especially broke 51 the old enmity between Jews and Samaritans again. Galilean pilgrims who went to Jerusalem, took their way through Samaria. This pilgrimage was attacked by the inhabitants of a village, with many travelers perished. Then called the Galileans of Cumanus to punish the crimes committed against their fellow countrymen. Cumanus however, could be bribed by the Samaritans, ignoring the complaints of the Galilean. The Galilean called then the Jewish people to arms. Together, they destroyed several villages. Cumanus presented with numerous soldiers and armed Samaritans against the Jews. The Samaritans, however, complained because of the destruction of their villages to the governor of Syria, Gaius Ummidius Durmius Quadratus, he referred the most distinguished Jews and Samaritans, as well Cumanus with their cause in Rome to negotiate before Emperor Claudius. Claudius realized that the Samaritans were responsible for the conflict. Cumanus was sent into exile, his tribune Celer delivered to the Jews, tortured and beheaded. As successor in Judea Marcus Antonius Felix was appointed.
