Verchères, Quebec

Verchères is a municipality in the Canadian province of Québec. It is located on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River in the Montérégie administrative region.

History

Founded in 1672, the settlement Verchères was the scene of Iroquois attack, which was frustrated by the ingenuity of a 14- year-old girl named Madeleine, now known as Madeleine de Verchères in the 17th century. A cast iron statue of the heroine is now at the site of the former ramparts of the settlement on the banks of the St. Lawrence River.

In Verchères a rowboat was developed at the end of the 19th century, the Verchères sloop. A copy of this boat type will be issued in the summer and autumn in the Jean Marie Moreau park.

The motto of Verchères is " In Tenebris Lumen Rectis cords " to German " from the shadows created light for proper heart ". The streets are named after the local residents, as well as famous people from the region.

The population of Verchères growing steadily, 2001, the population size of 4782 and 2010 reached 5528 inhabitants.
