The Verticordia, often called Spring Flowering Shrubs, are a genus of flowering plants in the myrtle family ( Myrtaceae ).

Description

Verticordia species are evergreen shrubs or rarely trees, the plant height from 1 to 7 m rarely achieve. The whole plants contain essential oils. The opposite constantly and rarely whorled at branch arranged leaves are simple, can be tiny to medium in size and have a smooth margin. Stipules are not available.

The flowers are borne singly or in few differently constructed inflorescences. The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold radial symmetry and to strongly zygomorphic. There are 20 stamens present, most of which only ten, rarely five, are fertile. Two carpels are a inferior ovary fused with a stylus and a scar. Pollination is by insects ( entomophily ) or birds ( Ornithophilie ). They are usually contain only one, rarely two seeds dry unilocular fruit.

Dissemination

Verticordia species are in the northern, eastern and south-western Australia is home (Western Australia and Northern Territory ). They thrive in a Mediterranean climate.

System

The botanical genus name is derived from the Latin Verticordia: epithet of Venus, the charioteer of the heart; it was a temple built as three Vestals were both like, give them the hearts of women would turn away from unchastity.
