Vesturbyggð is an Icelandic community in the region Vestfirðir. On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 900 inhabitants.

History

The municipality was established on June 11, 1994 by the merger of four rural communities

  • Barðaströnd ( Barðastrandarhreppur )
  • Raudasandur ( Rauðasandshreppur )
  • Patrekshreppur and
  • Bíldudalur ( Bíldudalshreppur ).

Country hand, it completely encloses the rural community Tálknafjörður. The largest town is Patreksfjörður with 617 inhabitants, living in Bíldudalur 176 people and Kross Holt 19 people.

Patreksfjörður

Patreksfjörður is a fishing village, the town charter was granted in 1954. It lies on the north side of the fjord of the same name.

The airport is located opposite the resort on the south side of the fjord. Patreksfjörður is 403 kilometers by road from Reykjavík. The distance to the westernmost point of Europe Bjargtangar is about 60 km.

Bíldudalur

The small fishing Bíldudalur lives mainly from fishing and they specialize in the capture and processing of crabs.

Population Development

The decline in population between 1997 and 2006 was 25%.
