Vice-President of the European Commission

The Vice President of the European Commission is a member of the European Commission, representing the President of the Commission, if it is prevented. The Office shall be freely assigned by the President of the Commission and shall be additional to the other areas of responsibility to the Commissioner. The High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy is in accordance with Article 18 TEU always at the same time one of its Vice-Presidents.

So far, there have been several in each Commission Vice-President. Normally, the replacement of the President is perceived by the First Vice-President; only if it is also absent, takes over one of the other Vice-Presidents the line. To this end, the Commission shall set a specific order.

The Office of the Vice President is also associated with an increased remuneration. While the ordinary Commissioners refer a gross base salary of 19909.89 Euro for their activities from the EU budget, the Vice President will receive EUR 22122.10, 24422.80 euros the Commission (July 2008).

Current office holders

In the current Barroso Commission II are eight Commissioners Vice President, representing the President of the Commission in the following order:
