Victor Augagneur

Jean Victor Augagneur ( born May 16, 1855 in Lyon, † April 23, 1931 in Le Vésinet, Yvelines ) was a French politician.

Biography

Augagneur was initially in local politics and, most recently from 1900 to 1905 mayor of Lyon. In 1906 he was appointed governor-general of the colony of Madagascar and held that office until 1909.

In 1911 he was appointed by Prime Minister Joseph Caillaux as Minister of Public Works, Posts and Telegraphs in the current government until 1912.

From June 13 to August 3, 1914, he was Minister of Public Instruction and Fine Arts in the cabinet of Prime Minister René Viviani. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was then to August 29, 1915 Secretary of the Navy in Viviani's government. Successor as Minister of Education was Albert Sarraut.

In 1920 he was Governor-General of the colony of French Equatorial Africa, and held that office until 1923.
