Víctor Balaguer i Cirera

Víctor Balaguer ( born December 11, 1824 in Barcelona, † January 14, 1901 in Madrid) was a Spanish poet and historian.

Victor Balaguer studied law, but never practiced this profession from. During his studies, he worked mainly with the history of Catalonia; he then also addressed in many of his literary works. By his reference books to Balaguer gave the years an excellent reputation that he was entrusted in 1854 with the leadership of the state archive in Barcelona. He was later honored with the title Professor of History.

As Balaguer also politically active, he was elected in 1869 in the Cortes, where he represented Vilanova i la Geltrú. As a great orator had just his political speeches appreciated by friends and opponents as feared.

In his early work outweighed literary dramas in which Balaguer themed events and people of Catalan history and antiquity. His publications on the Catalan troubadours (among Historia y politica de los literaria trovatores ) were for many years the standard works on this subject. Balaguer was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Madrid.

At the age of 76 years Víctor Balaguer died on January 14, 1901 in Madrid.
