The Victor Harbor Road is a trunk road in the southeast of the Australian state of South Australia. It connects to the Main South Road Fleurieu Peninsula at Old Noarlunga with the port city of Victor Harbor on the south coast of the peninsula.

Course

From Old Noarlunga, the road led originally to the southeast through the city McLaren Vale and from there directly to the south by Willunga before going into a steep, winding driveway, the rock step south of the settlement, which is part of the Mount Lofty Ranges, overcame. This ramp was known as Willunga Hill.

Since 1970, a ring road leads west past the McLaren Vale and Willunga and west through the vineyards of the settlement. A four-lane route climbs the rock step. The old road is now called Old Willunga Hill Road and is occasionally the discharge of cycle races, eg as part of the Tour Down Under.

After Willunga Hill, the new road reached again the old route. It leads down to a moderate slope to Mount Compass. 3km to the south branches off the Mount Compass Goolwa Road, which leads to the mouth of the Murray River in Goolwa. After a further 26 kilometers through hilly terrain and the coastal plain, the Victor Harbor Road reached the port city of Victor Harbor.

Traffic Safety

In recent years, the traffic increased on this road too fast, because the coastal settlements between Victor Harbor and Goolwa was settled more and more dense. Resulting in rising numbers of accidents: In 2000-2004 died on this route 14 drivers and 163 were injured. Speed ​​limited areas, the road was resurfaced, passing lanes attached, set up and monitoring strengthened by the police: since 2004, extensive measures were therefore taken.

The Royal Automobile Association ( RAA ) awarded 4.5 out of 10 possible points on the route. This means that important minimum standards are not met. The RAA is proposing an expansion to four lanes with separate directions of travel, which would increase security significantly.
