Victor Jacobi

Victor Jacobi ( born October 22, 1883 in Budapest, † December 12, 1921 in New York, NY) was a Hungarian operetta composer.

He studied from 1903 to 1905 at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music with Hans ( János ) Koessler, along with Albert Szirmai and Leó Weiner. Even in his student days, his first operetta, A rátartós királykisasszony 1904 ( The haughty princess) premiered, this is still under the name Viktor Jakabfi. In 1902 he wrote the libretto for an early stage work of Emmerich Kálmán. Then appeared until 1914, almost every year a new operetta. His favorite lyricists was Ferenc Martos.

His best-known operettas are Leányvásár ( marriage market ) (1911) and Sybil (1914 ). These successes also made ​​him internationally known. In 1914 he traveled to London and emigrated due to the outbreak of World War I in the United States. There he composed together with Fritz Kreisler operetta Apple Blossoms.

He is one of the greatest Hungarian composer of operettas. His most successful works are still popular today, especially in Hungary.
