Victor Lemoine

Victor Lemoine ( born October 21, 1823 in Delme, Lorraine, † December 11, 1911 ) was a French plant breeders. Many of its varieties, especially the Lilac and Peony varieties are still very common today.

Life

Lemoine came from a family that had produced for several generations, gardeners and plant breeders. After his graduation he worked for several years in various leading European companies for gardening and plant breeding, including the situation of Louis Van Houtte in Ghent in Belgium.

In 1849 he founded his own nursery in Nancy.

Victor Lemoine and his wife Mary had a son Émile Lemoine ( 1862-1942 ) and a grandson of Henri Lemoine ( 1897-1982 ), who continued the nursery. Only in 1955 it was closed.

Victor Lemoine in France has gained such fame that Société Nationale d' Horticulture de France monies collected after his death, to erect a monument to him in Nancy.

Work

Among his most important works is the production of new varieties of lilacs (Syringa ), with which he began in 1870, and which was continued by Émile Lemoine and Henri Lemoine. Overall, they bred more than 200 new varieties. Among other things, known as Syringa X hyacinthiflora hybrid group, a hybrid of Syringa Syringa vulgaris oblata and goes back to it. As before, also is popular, " Mme Lemoine ," the first white variety with double flowers.

Up to the present time the tone are also his breeding of pipes shrubs ( Philadelphus ), begonias ( Begonia ) and peonies (Paeonia ). The Peony varieties are mentioned here as representative: Le Printemps (1905 ), Primevere (1906 ), Sarah Bernhardt (1906 ) and Solange (1907 ),

Early as 1852, shortly after he founded the nursery, the Revue Horticole mentioned his Breeding Portulaks a double perianth. Two years later, a cinquefoil ( Potentilla ) with double perianth ( Gloire de Nancy) and the first rotation crop hybrids ( Streptocarpus ).

At the same time, Lemoine engaged with fuchsias ( Fuchsia) and bred more than 250 new varieties. Together with the Englishman James Lye, he coined the fuchsias breeding in the 19th century.

In the last 15 years of his life he worked with a variety of other ornamental plants, such as Astilbe ( Astilbe ), larkspur ( Delphinium ), Deutzien ( Deutzia ), gladiolus ( Gladiolus ), Coral Bells ( Heuchera ), barbs ( Penstemon ), dahlia (Dahlia ), chrysanthemums (Chrysanthemum ), Phlox (Phlox ), saxifrage ( Saxifraga ) geraniums (Pelargonium ), clematis and honeysuckle ( Lonicera ).

In addition to the breeding of many new varieties we owe Victor Lemoine also the import of new ornamental plants, such as Spirea Spiraea thunbergii - kind.
