Vieux (Calvados)

Vieux is a commune with 676 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Calvados. It belongs administratively to the arrondissement Caen and Canton Évrecy.

Geography

The community is located about ten kilometers southeast of Caen. Neighboring municipalities are:

  • Maltot in the north,
  • Feuguerolles bully in the east,
  • Amayé -sur -Orne in the south,
  • Avenay in the southwest,
  • Esquay -Notre -Dame to the west and
  • Fontaine- Étoupefour in the northwest.

On the southern municipal boundary runs from west to east the river Guigne, which eventually drains into the River Orne.

History

Vieux was the ancient Aregenua (of Gallic atmosphere, "down" and genoa, " mouth " ), the capital of the Celtic tribe of Viducassen. In Roman times, the name was changed after the inhabitants in Civitas Viducassensis, from which finally the current name Vieux was born.

1580 here one of the main font stones from ancient Gaul was found in the Latin language, the Marbre de Thorigny (marble [ stone ] of Thorigny ); actually the stone in Vieux and not in Thorigny, today Torigni -sur- Vire, was discovered.

During Operation Neptune, the invasion of Normandy in 1944, the Cote 112 (English Hill 112 ), a hill in the immediate vicinity of Vieux, scene of a seven-week battle was ( June to July) between German and Anglo- Canadian troops.
