Viivi Luik

Viivi Luik ( born November 6, 1946 at the village Tänassilma, community Viiratsi / County Viljandi ) is an Estonian writer and poet.

Training

Viivi Luik was born into a peasant family. She attended elementary school in Tänassilma, the intermediate level in doldrums (municipality Rõngu ) and the high school in Tallinn. From 1965 she worked as a librarian and archivist in Tallinn. Since 1967 she lives there, interrupted by longer stays abroad (Finland, Germany, Latvia, Sweden), as a freelance writer.

Poetry

As early as 1962 Viivi Luik had published his first poems. Followed in 1965 her first book. Until her 40th birthday, she has written about 400 poems. Her novels deal with the states and moods during the Soviet era. Since 1967 she has worked as a freelance writer who held several fellowships, especially in the 1990s. Today Viivi Luik is one of the most important and internationally famous Estonian poets of the present. Again and again, it goes into their work to social tensions and fragile interpersonal networks. The connection to the rural Estonia is always present.

1988 she was awarded the Juhan Liiv Poetry Prize. In 1992 she was awarded the Culture Prize of the Estonian state.

Prose

In the spring of 1985 appeared to many surprising her debut novel Seitsmes rahukevad ( German Seventh peace Spring, 1991), in the forceful language in childhood is described in Stalinism. The novel has been translated into more than ten languages ​​and made the author known outside of Estonia. Six years later Viivi Luik submitted her second novel, Ajaloo ilu ( The Beauty of German History, 1995). The novel deals with the year 1968 and the experiences of young Estonian intellectuals against the background of the hippie movement and the invasion of Soviet troops in Prague.

Viivi Luik is married since 1974 with the writer and diplomat Jaak Jõerüüt (* 1947).
