Juhan Liiv

Juhan Liiv ( born April 30, 1864 in Alatskivi; † 1 December 1913 in Kavastu - Koosa, now the town Luunja, Tartu county ) was an Estonian poet and writer. He is the younger brother of the Estonian poet Jakob Liiv ( 1859-1938 ).

Juhan Liiv came from very humble background. Nevertheless, his parents placed high value on education. He attended the village school in Naelavere and then the parish school of Kodavere. In 1886 he resigned his high school at the prestigious Hugo Treffner Gymnasium in Tartu.

Juhan Liiv was since 1885 members of the Estonian cultural magazines Virulane, Sakala and Olevik. Early on, he wrote poetry, but found no echo. Only the short story Vari ( The Shadow ) gave him a literary initial success. The dark tale of the hero Villu, which is physically weak but mentally the stronger, often associated with life Liivs.

Since 1892, Liiv worked as a freelance writer. 1894 Juhan Liiv had to receive medical treatment because of an incipient mental illness ( paranoia), from which he suffered greatly until the end of life.

In 1909 he met with peace Tuglas always and the literary group " Young Estonia " ( Noor - Eesti ). During his lifetime appeared essentially just a collection of poems Luuletused (1909 ), a collection of 495 poems that are among the most famous of Estonian literature. Liivs physical infirmities, his mental illness and his individualism reflected in many poems. Others speak of the love of the Estonian home and nature.

Juhan - Liiv Poetry Prize

Since 1965 (with interruptions from 1970 to 1983 by the Soviet occupying power ) every year on April 30, the birthday Juhan Liivs who lent named after him Poetry Prize in Alatskivi. It is awarded for a single poem, which was published for the first time during the previous year.
