Viktor Suslin

Viktor Suslin (Russian Виктор Евсеевич Суслин transcribed Viktor Suslin Jewsejewitsch; born June 13, 1942 in Miass, Chelyabinsk Oblast, Soviet Union, † July 10, 2012 in Hamburg) was a Russian composer.

Life

From 1950 to 1961 he attended the music school in Kharkov in piano, composition and music theory. From 1962 to 1966 he studied composition (with Nikolai Pejko ) and piano (with Anatoly Vedernikov ) at the Moscow Institute Gnessins. Since 1966 he was a lecturer at the Moscow Music Publishing, Muzyka ', where he among other things, the Russian edition of the stage works of Richard Wagner was responsible. From 1972 to 1975 he taught orchestration and score reading at the Moscow Conservatory. Together with the composer Vyacheslav Artyomov and Sofia Gubaidulina founded Suslin 1975, the improvisation group Astraea. Increasingly suffering from performance prohibitions, Suslin emigrated in 1981 with his family in the Federal Republic of Germany. Here he worked as a lecturer of music publishers Sikorski and lecturer at the Lübeck Musikhochschule. Well-known artists such as Gidon Kremer, David Geringas or Mark Pekarski campaigned for the performance of his works, so that he since the 80s regularly at various festivals of contemporary music ( in Paris, Cologne, Tokyo, Salzburg, curls House, Zurich, and later in Moscow and St. Petersburg) was represented. In the 90 years Suslin hosted a series of workshops Broadcasting (WDR, NDR ) and conducted master classes in France and the Czech Republic. Since 2007, Suslin was managing director of Belaieff Verlag. In 1990 he received the Culture Prize of Kreis Pinneberg. He lived until his death in Appen - sub Glindemann near Hamburg.

Viktor Suslin's catalog of works is not particularly extensive, but very diverse, especially in the field of chamber music. He tried to give each new plant in compositional technique and aesthetic individuality. His expression, ranging from ecstatic passion ( Patience, Farewell, Poco a poco II, In My End Is My Beginning ), meditative, lyrical concentration (Trio Sonata, Midnight Music, Le deuil blanc) on humorously quirky excursions ( Sinfonia piccola, Three choirs by Daniil Kharms, Gioco appassionato, terrarium ) to works with mystical and magical trains ( Chanson contre raison ). In character is Suslin's music is more lyrical than dramatic, but produce very expressive. In his works, he avoided superficial contrasts and patch dramatic effects. Minimalism or Polystilistic were alien to him. The basis of his music was in the pluralism of the material, not the styles.
