History

Vila do Porto is the oldest city in the Azores. 1432 was taken by the Portuguese in possession with the landing of a member of Christ the Equestrian Order of the island of Santa Maria. As of 1439 the settlement began; In 1472 the town was granted the city rights.

In Vila do Porto has a primary school, a secondary school, a high school and a church. In addition, for some years, there is also a health center ( hospital outpatient and inpatient care ). 2008, the port was extended with a yacht range. Attractions

Across the harbor stands on a hill Fort São Brás. The main church is the parish church Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora da Assuncao. It was built in the 16th century, making it one of the oldest churches in the Azores. After a major fire in 1832 it was rebuilt.
